Active membership requires monetary compensation for work in outdoor communications in the following categories and volume. Active members have met these professional standards and have the right to vote and hold office. The standard must be met on an annual basis.

Magazines: Eight feature articles, 24 fillers, or masthead credit.
Newspapers: 24 columns, articles, or masthead credit.
Internet: 24 features at least 500 words in length, or masthead credit.
Editor or Webmaster: masthead listing.
Book Author: One book per two-year period.
Photographer: 36 images published in any medium.
Videographer: Produce, host, or write one feature video.
Radio: 13 programs 30 minutes in length; or 26 programs of shorter duration; or producer.
TV: producer or editor of outdoor programming.
Public lecturer: 12 lectures or presentations.
Publisher (print or electronic): masthead-listed.
Illustrator: 15 published illustrations or cartoons.
Public Relations/I&E Officer: Full-time employee.
Trade or Industry Show Organizer: Organizes one show per year minimum.
Tourism Agent: Full-time employee promoting outdoor-related tourism.
Any combination of the above as approved by the Membership Screening Committee.

Associate members do not meet the standard for active membership, but hold an interest in outdoor communications mutual to the active members.  Associate members may not vote or hold office, but may apply for active membership at anytime, and are required to pay an application fee.

Retired members must be active members of the WOW for a minimum of 10 years and reached the age of 55 years before requesting retired status from the Membership Screening Committee.  The applicant is required to pay an application fee. A retired member forfeits all the rights and privileges enjoyed in an active-member status, with two exceptions: Retired members may attend all functions of the corporation and serve on all committees except the Nominations Committee.

Student memberships are granted to college students enrolled in courses or degree majors related to outdoor communications and natural resources management.  Student members hold an interest in outdoor communications mutual to the active members. Student members may not vote or hold office, but may apply for active membership at anytime, and are required to pay an application fee.
